Times Square New Year's Eve Ball
New York City
Lighting Designer: Focus Lighting
Lighting Science helped New York City—and millions of viewers around the world—to ring in 2008 with a cutting-edge “green” redesign of the city’s historic New Year’s Eve ball.
To mark the 100th anniversary of the Times Square celebration, LSG created an environmentally-friendly LED lighting system that integrates more than 9,500 LED lights with nearly 700 Waterford Crystal facets—transforming the iconic symbol into a sparkling, highly energy-efficient sphere that shines twice as brightly as the one used in past years.
The new ball is 6 feet in diameter, weighs 1,200 pounds and incorporates both colored and white LEDs—and consumes only about as much energy as ten toasters.
