As the largest and most populous city in Australia, Sydney stood at the frontier of modernization. In March 2010, Lighting Science Group Corporation partnered with the Sydney City Council and Ed Darmanin from Switched On Innovations (SOI) to fit the streetlights of Darlington Road, the center of Sydney’s most colorful nightclub precinct, Kings Cross. Among six companies, SOI and Lighting Science were selected for the roadway fitting for Kings Cross. In addition to delivering the project on an extremely tight deadline, Lighting Science also provided a series of mock-ups that attested to their ability to meet the necessary Australia and New Zealand lighting codes. Contrary to using at least two or even three fittings per pole to meet the required lux levels that achieves the relevant Australian lighting codes for pedestrian roadway, Lighting Science engineered one fitting per pole, even for Sydney’s major pedestrian mall, Martin Place.
